Founded in 1781, Los Angeles belonged to the Spanish before becoming part of the United States. The city was originally named El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula (The City of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of Porcincula). Tinseltown emerged thanks to HJ Whitley, a real estate developer who bought and subdivided property in Hollywood when just 18 families were living there and convinced the first movie studio to set up shop in LA. That studio would later become part of Universal Pictures, the oldest surviving film studio in the United States. Real estate sales also contributed to one of the most iconic parts of Hollywood–the Hollywood Sign, which was built as an advertisement for a neighborhood in the 1920s and became a beloved fixture of Los Angeles. As the entertainment capital of the world and a diverse city leading the way in tech, real estate, and fashion, Los Angeles is a city whose innovation has changed the cultural landscape of our world forever. from Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe all the way to the Kardashians, dozens of Hollywood stars have called Los Angeles “home.”
