History of New York, NY

New York City History

From Colonial Trading Post to The World Trade Center Buildings

What began as a trading post on the southern tip of Manhattan Island, settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 slowly grew into an international trading center by the 19th centure. Could those early settlers have known that the center of their small world was destined for international greatness and would become one of the most iconic cities in the world for food, fashion, culture, music, movies, nightlife, and more?

New York City evolved into a magnet for foreign trade, immigrants, and hopeful dreamers seeking opportunity.

The Battle of Long Island, the largest battle of the American Revolutionary War, was fought in August 1776 within the modern-day borough of Brooklyn. Following the war, New York City was named the first US capital under the Constitution. Though New York City was only the capital of the United States from 1785-1790, it is much regarded as a world capital, influencing the world’s leading industries.

“New York is not a city, it’s a world.”

– unknown

The 19th century saw the creation of Central Park, the American Civil War, and an influx of Irish and German immigrants to the city. By 1920, New York had become the most populous urbanized area in the world, ahead of London. Following WWII, New York City was a solidified economic leader and at the forefront of industry, communication, and the arts.
